The professionals at EMCNJ are well versed in the often complex and unique legal, care, financial, residential and personal issues facing those who are aging or living with a disability and are sensitive to the complex and naturally emotional relationships with both immediate and extended family.     

Like a judge, a mediator is a neutral third party.  Unlike a judge however, our mediators are there to guide and facilitate the participants towards a resolution rather than to impose one.  We at the Elder Mediation Center subscribe to the notion that the goal of the mediation process is for the participants to arrive at a mutually acceptable resolution of the conflict; in that sense we believe strongly in the notion of self-determination.  

We also subscribe to the notion of the Ethical Model of Mediation.  Although the participants themsevles should ultimately arrive at their own solutions with the assistance of the mediator, it is the role of the mediator to guide the participants towards a Principled Resolution; that is a resolution based upon the principles of Autonomy, Beneficence, Do No Harm, Fidelity and Fairness to All.
